Relay for Life will be June 23 at the Mizzou Rec center from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. As in past years, the Relay for Life is getting companies to participate in fundraising. One of these companies is Kroger, also known as the grocery store Gerbes. All three Gerbes stores are planning on coming and not only walking in the event, but are also setting up tents and booths selling things like banana’s and bottled water.
Jessica Heisler, floral manager at Gerbes on Paris Road, is the reason that her store will be participating this year.
“The Nifong store has always been in charge of it, and they asked our store to participate in it with them. It’s my job to tell everyone about it and get them involved.” Heisler said. Heisler has never participated in the relay before; however, all of the stores in Columbia are supposed to be involved yearly.
“Every store’s goal is to raise $1,000,” Jasmine Clifford said, front end manager at the Paris store. “I wanted to have a car wash to make some of the money, but because of safety issues we aren’t allowed to do so. We are planning on having jean days at work, where the employees pay to wear jeans.”
Participants must pay a $10 sign up charge; however, for Gerbes employees that participate, the store is paying the fee. Gerbes stores are also accepting donations for the event.
